Sydney Impressionism: The Australian Impressionist Arthur Streeton

The Australian Impressionist Artist Arthur Streeton has been an inspiration of mine for many years. Especially the small oil paintings he created at Sydney's Little Sirius Cove during the 1890's.

Streeton lived in a bohemian camp with other artists, poets and musicians, just down from where Taronga zoo is situated today.

The paintings he created resemble the most pure form of 'plein-air' impressionism in Australia. No other paintings of his day respond so immediately to the transient play of light and colour. His works are a delight (click here)

The cove is a must for all artists and lovers of impressionism, the idyllic sights and sounds of the harbour continue to resonate. The Mosman Council has created an historical walk of discovery which beautifully takes in the original locations the artist visited.

Here are some of my own works which I painted at Sirius cove.

Rowing paintings from an old sketch book

I recently found a sketch book from 1995 containing some studies of rowers on the Nepean River.

The Nepean River is still one of the world's greatest places to row.
